33. Korean Lunar New Year

 

 

  Korea has had a long-standing tradition of using a lunar calendar. This practice was not unique to Korea, as it was also prevalent in other parts of Asia, particularly the Israeli region and the Americas (North and South; encompassing civilizations such as the Native Americans, Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans). The lunar calendar was favored due to its ability to more accurately reflect the passage of time as measured by the moon's phases. Even the festivals described in the Bible are calculated based on the lunar calendar. The biblical term "month-beginning" (월삭) signifies the first appearance of the new moon, corresponding to the first day of a lunar month.

 

  Korea has traditionally used a lunar calendar, with the first day of the first lunar month being Seol (설, Lunar New Year) and the 15th day of the eighth lunar month (a full moon) being Chuseok(추석). These are our folk festivals where we pay our respects to elders by bowing, make delicious traditional food, and spend quality time with family, relatives, and neighbors.

 

  When I was a boy, we would wear hanbok(한복) and visit our relatives and neighbors to pay our respects on New Year's Day. We would be treated to delicious food and receive lucky money. It was a wonderful time. It's a shame that these traditions are disappearing nowadays.

 

  Today is Lunar New Year in Korea. I suppose tomorrow will be like a New Year's Day in the United States. I hope everyone spends a joyful time with their family and relatives.

 33. 한국의 설 명절

 

 

  한국은 오래전부터 음력 달력을 사용해 왔다. 한국뿐만이 아니라 동양 특히 이스라엘 지방과 남북(南北) 미(美) 대륙(大陸, 미국 원주민, 아스테카 문명, 잉카문명, 마야문명)에서도 음력 달력을 사용하였다. 태양보다는 달의 변화가 시간의 흐름을 잘 나타낼 수 있어서이겠지, 성경에 나오는 절기도 모두 음력으로 계산된 것이다. 성경에 나오는 월삭(月朔)은 달이 처음 뜨는 날이지 그러니 음력으로 초하루가 된단다.

 

  우리나라는 예부터 음력을 사용했는데 그 1월 1일이 설이고 8월 15일(만월)이 추석이 된다. 민속 명절이 되고 어른에게 세배도 하고 맛있는 전통음식을 만들어 먹으며 가족, 친족 그리고 이웃과도 사귐이 있고 나누며 지내는 절기이다.

 

  할아버지가 어렸을 때는 한복을 입고 친족과 이웃에 다니며 세배를 드렸고 음식도 대접받고 세뱃돈도 받는 날이었다. 기분이 좋은 날이지, 오늘날에는 이런 풍속이 많이 사라져서 무척 아쉽단다.

 

  오늘은 한국의 설이다. 내일은 미국이 설날이 되겠지 모두 가족과 친족을 생각하면서 즐겁게 보내고 인사하면 좋겠다.
